At the foot of the John Frostbridge in Arnhem archaeologists have found large quantities of personal belongings from soldiers and other war remains from World War II.

According to the archaeologists the excavations will give a better view on what happened around the bridge after the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944

Market Garden

The John Frostburg crossing the Rhine is the bridge that the Allied Forces could not secure in 1944 and why Oeration Market Garden failed. Because Rijkswaterstaat (part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment) is handling the river forelands of the Rhine, archaeologists are doing their research.

It appeared that there are a lot of bomb craters on the side of the bridge which were filled up with war remains to equalize the ground.

Flak

In the ground they found a German Air Force Shield buried (a Flak) what proves, according to investigators, that the bridge was very important for the Germans even after the battle.

A Bailybridge (a temporarily shore connection) was also found. Close by a lot of German and British weapons, ammunition, helmets, coins, news paper remains, emergency rugs, a switchblade and a first aid kit was found.
