Fundraising to create quiet-room in the Airborne Museum

The Airborne Museum Hartenstein started a fundraising campaign to be able to build a quiet room. In this space, visitors remember the horror of the war and commemorate the victims.

Dutch bestseller writer Herman Koch is the icon of this fundraising.

Thousands of victims

The museum is located in villa Hartenstein, headquarters of the British airborne troops in September 1944. It tells about the largest airborne operation of World War II in Dutch history.

Thousands of military servicemen and civilians lost their life during the violent battles. The operation failed. A lot of people still visit the museum each year to commemorate.

The urge to to commemorate in silence

‘From various comments from our visitors we got to understand they need to reflect on what happened in silence. This is not possible at the moment. Because the museum is working on a large-scale renewal, we would like to respond to what our visitors like to find in our museum.’ says Sarah Heijse, director from the Airborne Museum.

‘And that’s why we started this fundraiser. The cost for the realization of the quiet room are 30,000 euro and with this action we hope to raise the amount we need. It is intended that this space is ready for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands in 2020.’

Herman Koch icon of the funraising

The fundraiser is organized with crowdfunding platform Voordekunst (For art), in the creative sector. On this platform Herman Koch tells in a video (subtitled) why the museum wants to realize the quiet room.

Koch was born in Arnhem in 1953 and wrote a book called ‘Eindelijk oorlog’ (Finally war), which tell about the days after the Battle of Arnhem.
