The 1944-1945 National Liberation museum in Groesbeek near Nijmegen in The Netherlands gets 6.5 million euros for an entirely new building.
The thirty-year-old museum is still situated in the former buildings of work-island Neeltje Jans, these buildings were transported to Groesbeek in 1987.
In addition to the current museum
a new construction will rise with a 12 meter high dome. It will represent a parachute like the Allied forces landed with in September 1944 in the Netherlands.
According to Director Wiel Landers, the museum will focus in the new building on the consequences of the second world war for the Dutch-German border region. The museum is almost on the border with Germany.
The region had, according to Lenders, 'a starring role in the last year of the war'.
The new building should be ready in the summer of 2019, before the 75th anniversary of the liberation of South-Netherlands.
