An airplane bomb from the Second Worldwar was found at the former Maurits barracks in Ede. Before any construction work is started in these regions, the area is always searched for remaining ammunition from WWII
Not for nothing and this one was defused at 15 March
The 500Lbs Medium Capacity MK1 was probably dropped by the British Royal Airforce prior to operation Market Garden. On the morning of 17 september 1944, American and British planes carried out bombardments.
The intention was to hit German targets and to disable, demorolize and distract them from what was about to happen that same afternoon: the mass dropping of parachutes on the Renkum Heath.
Unfortunately, it didn't always went well; there were also civilian targets hit and 69 Eden civilians lost their life. In memory of them there is monument on the Parkway in Ede
Some bombs did not exploded after hit and this bomb was one of them.
In order to dismantle the bomb the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) advised a safety area around the bomb. During the dismantling nobody could enter that area as it was hermetically sealed. Pets had to remain in the House until the area was opened up again.
After the EOD dismantled the bomb, they took it to Deelen Airport where it was brought to explosion.
