Tuesday evening, just before 17:00 the old chestnut tree next to the Airborne Museum fell with a loud bang. The tree is more than 100 years old.

Luckily no one got hurt.

chestnutThe chestnut fell next to the Sherman tank, which did not get damaged, although you could wonder if it would be damaged by the tree.

The roots broke and are still partly in the ground. According to the Gelderlander, the trees on the grounds of the museum were last checked in May.

The old chestnut, which is a monumental tree, was considered safe. Next to the tree is a beech that is about as old and also monumental. An external agency has checked both trees.

It showed that both trees were sick, but did not show any danger.

But that didn’t turn out to be true. Suddenly the roots broke and the tree came down.  So far, no war material have been found at the roots. In the tree itself, some fired ammunition will have been left behind.

The commune will now check the trees again. After that, it will be announced whether safety measures must be taken.
