Since 1948, the Fire of Liberation is inflamed in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This Freedom-fire marks the transition from commemoration to celebration, from the 4th to the 5th of May.
The fire is ceremonial inflamed at midnight in front of Hotel De Wereld at the 5th of May Square.
Ray Lord
The ceremony of the Fire of Liberation will start at 23.30 hours. After the ceremony the English veteran and liberator Ray Lord will hand over the Fire of Liberation to the Mayor of Wageningen: Geert van Rumund. He will ignite the fire at midnight.
When the fire is lit, many athletes receive the Fire of Liberation from the Mayor. During the national Freedom-fire estafette, in many groups, they spread the fire and the liberty message all over The Netherlands.
Some walk many miles and for hours to get the liberty message, brought by the Fire of Liberation, to their hometown. With the fire the Fire of Liberation is lit and around noun, May 5th, the Fire will burn in every part in The Netherlands.
City of Liberation
In Wageningen, the City of Liberation the Fire will be brought from the May 5th Square to the Main stage of all the stages in the city that day, by veteran and barrier of the Dutch Military William Order, Kenneth Mayhew.
The fire will be lit at 12:00, the starting-point of all the celebrating till 24:00. And The Netherlands is for 12 hours a country who, after they remembered all the fallen, kept 2 minutes of silence with them in their minds during their Remembrance of the Death on the 4th, turn in a celebrating, dancing, singing, country, like they do every year, thankful as always, not one area excluded.
